Distribution

Hello! Here's my distribution materials, and how I gained traction and still am trying to for my documentary, LAMENTATION.

Poster

This is the poster for LAMENTATION. There's a few reasons as to why I decided on this layout and image.
Firstly, the image is of one of the small sets during the film. I wanted the television screen to be over exposed so that you couldn't clearly see what was on it. Sufferers of Depersonalisation Disorder often describe their symptoms as living their life as though they're watching it through a television screen. It is also often described as a blur, something hard to focus on. This is why I wanted to have the television screen, and to have it overexposed.

Secondly, I also wanted to have the pronunciation of LAMENTATION on the poster. This is because I have previously made a film surrounding mental health, and this was named 'Definition'. This film included the pronunciations of key words to describe mental health, and so I wanted to give a sort of homage to my older film.

MOVE Collective Instagram Takeover

For a form of promotional material, I decided to utilise my creation of the Instagram Takeovers on the MOVE Collective social media page.

Here's some photos of what I uploaded to the day, where roughly about 60 people saw each image, publicising LAMENTATION.

I decided to include a Q&A as they seem to generally be seen as quite a fun,
interactive feature on Instagram that lots of people tend to enjoy engaging in.

Doing the Instagram Takeover was, in my opinion, a really good idea. The "Highlight" feature on Instagram allows you to keep Instagram Stories on your profile indefinitely, and so these images and videos are still available to be watched and interacted with - leaving them as a lasting footprint on the social account, which has a substantial amount of followers, currently standing at 132.

Anonymous Participation (Google Document)

For LAMENTATION - it was absolutely vital that I included as many voices as possible, be it through a spoken voice or writing. To send out word of my documentary and also hopefully get some keen volunteers, I created a Google Document. This document asked for people who suffer (or are unsure if they do) from Depersonalisation Disorder or Derealisation Disorder to come forward and talk about their experiences. They needed to let me know if they suffered, if so, how long? They could also give me details about their experiences, and how if made them feel. Their responses were documented and used in the narrative of the documentary, trying to bring their thoughts and emotions to life to give a non-sufferer a taste of how someone with DPDR feels.

This ended up garnering attention from a few interesting places around the globe - from the US, to Brazil, to Austria, to name a few places. It's exciting to hear that people from such vastly different corners of the world are looking forward to the light being shed on DPDR.

CrowdFunder

On 28th March, 2019, I started my CrowdFunder campaign at: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/lamentation.

I created the donation page to help pay towards venues, props and transportation. As my documentary is based in between two different segments - the consciousness and reality, I needed two vastly different locations. For the reality, I needed a bright forest with green floors and tall trees, and for the consciousness, I needed a black room, with black floors and black walls. As I was filming in Newcastle Upon Tyne, I couldn't use any university facilities, and so I had to pay for a venue, which turned out to be a theatre. I also ended up filming in Kielder Forest - which I had to cover travel expenses for. The props were also very important to link into the narrative of my documentary - this was costly.

The CrowdFunder was a phenomenal success - raising £215, which was £65 more than I had set at the target. This turned out to be extremely necessary, as I did go above budget, but I did expect this. In order to get these donations, I shared my page on many platforms - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and also MOVE Collective's social media handles (mainly Twitter, which I run more than the others).
